Lets be honest there are thousands of so called best workouts for abs that claim to give you the hardest and most ripped six pack and most of them do work although probably some better than others but what is the best I hear you ask.
This is something I am asked on a regular basis and my answer is always the same ….
The best workout for abs doesn´t exist.
Having defined abs is all about low body fat levels not doing specific workouts for abs that just target this area. This is one thing that frustrates me when I see fellow personal trainers blasting their clients with loads of ab exercises to target their core.
If you think about it your mid section is a variety of muscles and the main one that everybody can see is the rectus abdominus which is actually a large muscle divided by tendons. So when you get below 10% body fat the tendons are what become visible and create the washboard look. You can see this on everybody to some degree even if they haven´t done any ab exercises at all. Now obviously if you do specific training on this area then you will have a more defined and harder ab muscles but with too much body fat this won´t be apparent.

Therefore in my humble opinion the key to having a six pack is approximately 90% low body fat and 10% doing ab workouts for 6 pack development that hit the muscle directly with such exercises as hanging leg raises, planks and leg raises.
So instead of worrying about what is the best workout for abs focus more on finding the best fat burning diet for you and do more cardio in the form of High Intensity interval Training.
When you have these two factors working properly and your body fat is low enough then start to focus on direct ab workout.
I think it is important to understand what is required to get a six pack and make sure you are focusing your time and effort on the right activities.
Now all that being said if you already have low body fat levels and are looking for new exercises to add to your workouts for abs then try these 3 exercises.
Front Squats – Use either a barbell or two dumbbells and rest the weight on the front of your shoulders on your shoulders then perform a regular squat. This really makes the abs work hard as they struggle to stabilize your body throughout the movement.
Wood Chops – I like to use a cable machine or dumbbells for this exercise. The video gives a better idea of how this should be performed. Do them slow and controlled for optimum results.
Mountain Climber – One of my favourites. This exercise looks really easy but if you do it properly you can really feel the abs start to burn. Keeping the hips flat and the abs tight is the trick to getting the most from this exercise. In the video there is a 2 other really good ab exercises that you can add to this workout.
Remember washboard abs cannot be attained by trying to find the best workout for abs otherwise most people in the gym would have them. Think diet and cardio first and you will get results much quicker.

Howard,
Great advice. So many think that they can spot reduce by doing crunches and eventually end up with a ripped midsection. Like you said – it’s all about diet!
That “shrink wrap effect” method is awesome too!

Hi Kevin
Yes unfortunately it is all about the diet which is why so many guys and girls fail to get ripped. When you are younger (under 28) then you can get away with a more relaxed diet but as you get older as I am finding (i am in my forties) that what you put in your body is very quickly reflected on your physique.
Yes the shrink wrap method is a great little method to really sharpen up your look, I will be using it myself as I get in top shape for the summer.
Thanks
Howard
