Start doing circuit training exercises to lose belly fat Or Else…..

by Howard

If you read through a lot of the articles on the site you will notice that I am not a big fan of doing steady state cardio when it comes to fat loss. I don’t think it is a waste of time and I still enjoy going for a long jog or bike ride when I am in the mood. However when it comes to losing fat I have the best and quickest results using cardio interval workouts and circuit training exercises where the there is more intensity involved.

Circuit training is probably considered a more “old school” type of training but is becoming popular again as more people decide to workout out at home or outdoors doing boot camps or similar style training.

When I think of Circuit Training I always think of school days and the army so here is clip from  film that does the same. Always makes me laugh this scene.

Even in the gym you watch any personal trainers and I bet most of them are using some form of circuit type fashion training with their clients. For all my clients that want to lose weight I now design and use workouts that involve mini circuits of different types of exercises either using just body weight or free weights performed one after the other with intensity.

I have found this type of program design to be extremely effective and although they are tough to follow my clients love them because they start to see and feel the results in a short space of time.

So if you need more convincing here are 3 reasons why you should be using circuit training exercises in your fat loss program.

1. Circuit Training Exercises will supercharge you conditioning. Because you are moving from one exercise to the next without any recovery period in between you are working your cardiovascular system at a very high level forcing your body to adapt more quickly and stronger. Also as you are working the entire body in every workout which again will put extra pressure on your energy systems to work harder and respond faster when you are in recovery.Just a few weeks of circuits and you will notice a big difference in your fitness and energy levels.

2. Circuit Training Exercises will greatly increase your metabolic rate for a greater period of time.
It is a well known fact that the process of circuit training burns up a great amount of calories each time. Also as circuit’s combine strength and high intensity interval training this produces a much higher boost in your metabolism than more normal forms of cardio so the “afterburn” (the amount of extra calories burned after exercise) is much higher and lasts for longer. In your resting state following a circuit workout, your body is actually burning a greater amount of fat.

3.Circuit Training Exercises will give you a  great looking more functional body.
Given the fact that resistance training is used no matter what kind of circuit training you do, each workout will improve muscle tone and shape. Now unless you are using heavy weights you won’t get much bigger doing circuit training but you will improve your body shape, and develop lean dense muscle. When you do a lot of steady state cardio you run the risk of breaking down your muscles and making them softer. Circuit training with resistance means your muscles are used more plus the workouts are shorter due to intensity factor so your less likely to break down your body for energy. Also you will find that by doing circuit training exercises (especially those using body weight) you will feel much stronger and have better coordination, balance and agility due to the amount of muscles used and the different movements and positions you have to perform.

If I have persuaded you to give circuit training a try then here is a quick body weight circuit you can do at home or in the gym.

Prisoner Squat with kick out – Perform a squat with hands behind your head as then kick out a leg as you finish each squat – Alternate legs – 20 reps

Decline push-ups – Complete 10 reps of push-ups with the feet positioned on an elevated surface.

Forward Lunge – Make sure to keep your head up and back straight as you perform each lunge. while doing 10 reps on each leg.

Close Grip Push Up – Same as standard push up but with hands close together – 10 reps

Step Up – Make your movement more dynamic by raising the rear knee once you reach the top of the movement If just using body weight then these should done at a quick pace. 10 reps each leg

Squat Thrusts – Position yourself for press ups, but curl your knees to your chest, getting your legs pushed behind you Do fifteen repetitions of this

Perform this routine 3-5 times resting for a minute after each one.

If you need another workout try this one

Great post! What I love most about circuit training is that it is incredibly efficient. What other form of exercise can let you combine resistance training with cardiovascular fitness in such a short, intense period of time?

I’ve gotten amazing results with my bodyweight circuits and kettlebell circuits!

I love it!

Circuits are definitely the way to go, and there’s tons of different –and effective– variations: weights circuits, bodyweight circuits, strongman circuits, a blend of the above … With the right set-up these are amongst the most effective “fat burners” out there for sure !;-)

Hi Mark

Could not agree with you more. Using circuit style training incorporating a mix of styles has been extremely effective for myself and my personal training clients. If you want to lose body fat quickly then in my opinion circuits need to be in your weekly routine.

Cheers
